Welcome to The Major Quest

A unique and ambitious challenge lies ahead: to collect the signatures of every winner of the four major championships — The Masters Tournament, The Open Championship, The U.S. Open, and The PGA Championship — from 2000 through the end of 2025. In total, this extraordinary endeavor spans 103 champions and 103 signatures, each representing a defining moment in modern golf history.

This is more than a collection. It is a journey — one shaped by perseverance, passion, and the pursuit of connection to the game’s greatest stages. Each signature carries a story: unforgettable victories, dramatic finishes, breakthrough performances, and the human moments behind championship triumphs. These stories unfold here in a series of episodes titled The Quest, where the path to completing this remarkable collection is shared step by step.

We invite you to be part of the journey. Follow our progress through the live tracker, explore the rich history of the four majors, and uncover lesser-known facts that add new depth to golf’s most celebrated tournaments. Take part in “Golfing During the Quest,” engage with fellow enthusiasts, and help us grow a community united by a shared appreciation for the game and its champions.

What’s Next?

Did you know that…

The youngest winner of a Major was not even 18 years old?

Young Tom Morris was 17 years and 5 months old when he won The Open in 1868. A record that still stands to this day. About two dozen of other golfers have gone on to win a major before the age of 23. The one we all remember is Tiger Woods when he won the 1997 Masters Tournament at the age of 21 years and 3 months . In 2015, Jordan Spieth won 2 majors (The Masters and The U.S. Open) before the age of 22. Rory McIlroy was just over 22 years old (22 years, 1 month) when he won the 2011 U.S. Open.

The oldest winner of a Major was over 50 years old?

When Phil Mickelson won the 2021 PGA Championship, he became the oldest person to win a major golf championship. When he claimed his second Wanamaker trophy, he was 50 years, 11 months and 7 days old, three weeks shy of his 51st birthday. Jack Nicklaus was 46 years, 2 months and 23 days old when he won the 1986 Masters Tournament (his 18th Major). That ranks him the 4th oldest person to win a major after Phil, Julius Boros (1968 PGA – 48 years, 4 months, 18 days) and old Tom Morris (1867 Open – 46 years, 3 months, 10 days).

Between 2000 and the end of 2025, there are 103 Championships, not 104?

Each year there are 4 majors to be played: The Masters, The U.S. Open, The Open and The PGA Championship. Over the period spanning 2000 to the end of 2025, this amounts to a total of 104 championships. However, The Open Championship in 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus 103 Championships and 103 signatures to collect.

There are only 27 male golfers who successfully defended their major the next year?

Only 3 of the 27 players who have successfully defended their title have done it in the Quest period: Tiger Woods (3x), Brooks Koepka (2x) and Pádraig Harrington (1x).

Jack Nicklaus holds the record for the most runner up finishes in a major?

Alongside his 18 major championship titles, Jack holds the record for the most second-place finishes in major championships, with 19. Phil Mickelson has 12 runner up finishes, of which 6 came at the U.S. Open, the major he has never won.

The Masters

The youngest of the 4 majors. First played in 1934 on the grounds of Augusta National Golf Club. It is the only major that is played on the same course every year.

The U.S. Open

First played in 1865 and is known for its extremely difficult course setup. A winning score over PAR is not uncommon. The US Open is a test of stamina and survival.

The PGA Championship

The PGA Championship was first played in 1916 as a match play event. It was changed to stroke play in 1958. The winner receives the Wanamaker trophy, an iconic trophy in golf.

The Open

The oldest golf championship in the world, first played in 1860. It is contested on the coastal links courses across the United Kingdom. The winner takes home the Claret Jug.
